Bournemouth beach remains one of Britain’s best-loved beaches, 34 years after it kept me and my five brothers and sisters happy on our first ever B&B family holiday. It’s clean and family-friendly with seven glorious miles of Blue Flag sands that slope gently into the sea. Safe, with teams of RNLI Beach Rescue Teams providing constant surveillance during the summer, lost child centres and KidZone - a scheme whereby the beach is divided into colour-coded sections with matching kids’ wristbands (available from the Seafront Office) that means beach staff know where to return lost children. Beachside entertainers are out in force during the summer Kids’ Fun Festival, July 23 to September 23, and a free GamesZone kids’ club for over 5s operates at Boscombe Pier between July 24 and September 1.

There’s a railway station and mixture of free and pay parking along the beachfront and cliff tops where there are lifts to the beach. There are public loos and fish and chips, ice-creams and teas are never far away.
